The K-12 faculty collaborated in creating a K-12 thinking skills program using verbs based on work from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP.) NAEP defines comprehension as three levels: Locate and Recall, Interpret and Integrate, and Critique and Evaluate. Verbs for the Locate and Recall level include “identify, sequence, list, locate, recall describe, etc.” Verbs for Interpret and Integrate include “infer, interpret, integrate, persuade, compare, contrast, generalize, explain, etc.” And verbs for Critique and Evaluate include “judge, rate, assess, evaluate, critique, etc.” The Kindergarten set of verbs in these three categories is short and the list increase in length and rigor as the program proceeds through grade 12. The verbs are used in lesson planning, instruction, and assessment to involve all students in all three levels of thinking all the time. These verbs are also used to write objectives for each unit in each of our curricula. This K-12 thinking skill program is also a K-12 literacy program. All teachers use these verbs, therefore, all teachers are promoting literacy all the time. This is a great model for embedded literacy instruction.
